Hello all,
This has probably been discussed here before and I apologize for the repetition. I did search the site, but came up almost empty.
Will someone please advise me of the status/fate of the manufacturer(s) of Record and Marples tools (were they two brands from one manufacturer or two separate companies)? It appears that the Marples Blue Chip chisels are now Irwin branded, and I’ve noticed that Record vices have disappeared from some of the mail order catalogs. I did see a post somewhere here that mentioned that Anant had acquired some of Record’s tooling, I assume for planes, but it didn’t go into much detail. I’m just curious. I’ll appreciate any information you can pass on. Thanks.
Mike

Good link. Thanks.
I have heard that Anant acquired Record's tooling for vises. I hadn't heard anything about planes. Having a 2001-era Record plane (I own two) and having seen the Anant equivalent (and held both in my hands at the same time), they didn't look any more similar than a Record and a Stanley #4.
Record (and, I believe, Marples) was bought by Rubbermaid. Record was essentially killed.
I'm really, really sad about Record actually, I loved their stuff, even the modern stuff that wasn't as good.
deirdresm,Thanks for your response and the information. And you're right, it is sad about Record. I don't own much of their stuff (an old 073 shoulder plane and some clamps), but always thought they were one of the good guys. Do you know if Record and Marples were separate companies or brands of one manufacturer?
I don't know much about the history of Record, but I did find this one interesting page about Marples.http://www.marples.co.uk/page2.htmlIt seems Record was a separate company that made tools for Marples and Marples was later sold to Record:http://www.hyperkitten.com/tools/routers/marples/ (this page unfortunately predates the Rubbermaid incident, so I'm not sure what's happened since then).I'd be very surprised if the people on ukworkshop.co.uk didn't know more. :)
Good stuff. Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated. It's always a shame to see a well established brand disappear. But, 30 years ago there was no Lie-Nielsen, so I guess it all evens out.

I have a Record #4 and a #7 plane for sale. Early 80's vintage, fettled but little used, if anyone would be interested.
how much are you asking for the #4?
How's $35.00 plus shipping?
Sounds good - what kind of shape is the plane in?
Like new, I fettled it, then it sat on the shelf, the same for the #7. How about a package deal, $110.00 for the pair?
