reciprocating chisel / detail carver
Hi all! <!—-><!—-><!—->
I’m looking around to buy a (reciprocating) power chisel / detail carver, but all the ones I find are of brands I am not familiar with. Are any of you familiar with the following brands? Any better than another? Any experiences or recommendations? <!—-><!—->

Sandra,
I can't help you out. I am a carver but have never used the machines you are asking about. After you listen to all of the answers and come to a conclusion, let me know what you come up with. I keep thinking of trying out some power carving.
What types of carving do you do?
I am primarily a woodworker. I learned to carve in order to carve ornaments on furniture. In the past year I have gotten into chip carving as a nice recreation. I enjoy folk-art type stuff which is more stylized than realistic because it partially hides my lack of talent. For me this is a hobby, not a business.
Have fun. I hope you find some good advice, and I can't wait to learn what it is.
Mel
Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
I've had the automach flex shaft carver for 15 years. It's one of the first reciprocating carvers out there. The Arbortech is a bit bigger. All the others are fairly newer players I believe. You should try some of the other carving forums. Justsearch the history of them and you will find lots of information "then" ask questions!!!! There's at least 100 various wood forums.
You'll find with practice you can do better without the machine.
