I have a grain problem that I would like the group’s opinion on. I have
an arts & crafts dresser that is in quartersawn oak. The problem is that
the edge of the top has a really UGLY grain figure. Yea, I should have done
something in my choice, but I did not realize how bad it would turn out. My
chest of drawers … http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/eganders/finisheddresser004.jpg did not show this up in the same way. This is the dresser. It has just
been stained, but I am willing to do some drastic things if necessary. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/eganders/Dresserstainedbeforef…
1.jpg I would like to get your opinion on it. I have pointed to pictures of the
arts and crafts dresser. As I said, the wood is quarter sawn and I was able
to get the quarter sawn edge on almost every area, but the top edge shows
plain sawn. Worse yet, when it got stained, it gives the appearance of the
stain running. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/eganders/panaramaoftopedgeofde…

9.jpg My question is: Is there a finishing solution (possibly to de-accent the grain)
Should I bite the bullet and take the top off and attach a quarter sawn
edge?

Yes, I see that the name is a problem. Changed it. Let's see if this works

Hope this works
A couple solutions come to mind quickly;
1. Veneer the edge with Q'd Oak. You could use the existing top.
2. 'Turn' the top down, by either ripping a 45 along the edge, or use a lockmiter on a shaper, and turn the top face down over the front. This is a lot more work, and you should add to the width of the top before you do it, but you can still use the original top.
I know this "mistake" drives you nuts and its what you look at when you look at the piece. But lets face it, the whole piece is so good looking , only you'll notice it. Anyone else looking at it will be taken by how well proportioned it is. Pour a martini and , as they say on the Sopranos " forget about it".

Just about what I was going to say. I thought it looked nice.. Even in the close-up looked OK to me?? I missing something?
End grain is end grain! Wood is wood! If the overall looks nice why worry????
Just me.
I just think it looks like oak. If it really bothers you, edge band it with qs oak as suggested above.
