RE: Carter Roller Guides (28-198)
I am considering purchasing a set of Carter roller guides #28-198 for my Delta 14″ Bandsaw.
Please tell me your experience if you have tried these or something similar.
What is a good price?

I purchased the Jet roller guides for my jet 14" bandsaw. They are of the same design as the carter roller guides. I like them, now I must saw this is my first bandsaw and I don't have a lot of experience with bandsaws but it did make a noticeable difference in the quality of cut on a curve cut with a 1/4" blade and a resaw with a 1/2" blade. But on another web sit I have seen this discussion get a little heated. Some will say the cool blocks perform much better for various reasons. But in my experience the roller guides work very well. Easy to install, easy to adjust and last forever. Hope this helps.

Why do you think you need these?

I put some on an older Delta 14" several years ago. Can't say I was impressed. I removed and sold them. They raise the top guard a couple of inches so you are exposed to the blade more. Hardly any room below the table for the bottom ones. Once the Carter's are in place, the old travel adjusters are not used. You move the side support bearings with eccentric adjusters. The side roller bearings can't be used with blades that are narrower than the bearings are thick, 3/8"?. You back them off if using a smaller blade and the back edge of the blade just runs in the small groove in the rear support bearing. 1/4" is on my saw most of the time so I wouldn't have any side support with that blade. I seem to remember a fair amount of heat being generated in those bearings, too.
If your saw is set up well and you are using it correctly, the blade shouldn't even be touching the blocks and rear bearing. Maybe a light kiss when you feed too fast or accidentally put on a bit of side pressure. I've used Kool Blocks also. They just whine for no good reason. Now I use the standard blocks. I can tune them just behind the gullets of any size blade the 14" will handle. If I'm rubbing, I'm doing something wrong. They are easier to adjust and with the traveler, backing out tells you if you are in line correctly. I can't figure out why I would need or want anything other than the original equipment on a 14" saw. It works great.
