I am building a small cabinet from FWW, It has rail & stile panels on the sides and I will make the doors the same. I attached a simple line dwg showing top cutaway of the rail with panel inset. As you can see it has space for movement and relief of the panel (rabbitt)…My question is what is the best way to assemble this panel so all spacing is equal around, top bottom and left to right?

To keep equal spaceing and to prevent rattle you should use space ball's. These are small black rubber balls about 1/4" in dia. You can find them at http://www.cshardware.com for a good price.

The old fashioned way is to pin the panel to the rails with two tiny dowels. One dowel is located at the top rail at the center, the other at the bottom (both dowels go through the back of the rail, through the panel and partially through the front of the rail). Don't use this type of connector anywhere else to secure the panel or you will have expansion/contraction problems.
I had seen the rubber ball method but was wondering about how they did it "back then"....thanksmakinsawdust
