I am getting ready to make some cabinet doors. I have a Whiteside rail and stile set and I just purchased a CMT raised panel cutter with a back cutter on it. Would it be smarter to use a rail and stile cutter and a raised panel cutter of the same set? It looks like the groove that the rail and stile set will leave is about 1/4″ and the panel cutter looks like the tounge will be somewhat less than that. It looks like the back cutter can be shimmed out with washers to leave a larger tounge. I’m not sure what is the best thing to do. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have several rail and style sets that I intermix with different panel cutters or just make the bevels on the tablesaw. As long as the groove is the same size as the panel edge should be no problem. If it concerns you do a test and see if you like the results.

I dont see that using a s and r set with a different brand r.panel cutter is problematic. I do this all the time. As long as the tongue fits the groove it will be ok. Dont shim so tight that you have assembly problems. Good luck! Bob

Be sure to check, I seem to remember the CMT uses a different size the all the other common sets from Whiteside, Freud, etc.
