I live in the Northwest and am moving to the southeast in the middle of the summer. I will be packing all of my tools in some crates to be shipped. I am worried about my table saw, jointer etc rusting from the humidity and being closed up in a box. What can I do to prevent this?

Hi Fred... Use steel wool or a scotchbrite pad and rub on a coating of Johnsons Paste Wax. Let it dry. When you uncrate your tools use an old clean rag and buff the waxed surfaces. It's the easiest way to go. You can actually use any paste wax that does not contain silicones. Best luck with the move.

You can get 5lbs of silica gel desiccant (powder) for $23 including shipping from

That's enough to protect 200 cubic feet of space (I'm partial to overkill).
Put some in an old sock, twist-tie it and drop one into each crate-- you may even need to soak the tools in water before using!!

Plastics pay the bills, Woodworking keeps me sane!
I use a good grade gun lubricant/preservative on my tools. BreakFree is one of the best. There are others.
