Hi,
I have recently purchased a bosch GHO 26-82 portable planer. When i plane the edge of a board, the planer takes a deeper cut at the start and end of the cut. This isn’t snipe, but after a few passes, the edge becomes quite curved. The sole of the plane appears to be quite flat and parrallel between the toe and sole. Could this be operator error, or am i asking to much from a small tool to plane the edge straight?

Dear Dickie,
Almost certainly operator error. I use a Makita power planer and I have found that it can be quite sensitive to pressure. I have to be very deliberate in my motions or a less than straight board will result. On the Makita, I typically keep the pressure centered over the cutterhead, only shifting it to the back as the front sole departs the end of the board. It takes practice and is definitely a machine that requires a "feel". In your case, I would suggest the following:
1) I would begin by focusing hand pressure towards the front of the planer and see if that makes a difference.
2) I would also suggest trying to plane to a drawn line just as an exercise to develop a sense of how it cuts.
Practice, practice, practice!!!

Yeah, thanks for that, the difference in depth achieved by applieing defferent pressure along the cut has surprised me. I'll continue to practice.
Glad to of helped.John
It's pretty common with ordinary hand planes too. The more passes you make, the more likely it is to happen. Keep the number of passes to a minimum. Start with pressure only on the front, finish with pressure only on the rear.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
