Can I thin poly and use it as a wipe on. I checked the store and it costs almost twice as much to buy the wipe on rather than the brush on. What is the difference except for the viscosity.

Of course. 50/50 with mineral spirits is a good starting point.
Yep. Also - best advice I ever got re: applying wipe-on poly was from Taunton's Finishing by Jeff Jewitt:
(a) flood first coat, wait a few minutes, wipe it of
(b) subsequent coats with a non-textured paper towel (Viva is one brand).
I don't use wipe-on poly very often, but when I do, this method solved a lot of problems for me. After I got the hang of it, very little work required to rub out, etc.
FWIW - wash coat/seal coat of 1# - 1.5# shellac first helps bring out the grain - but don't know what wood you are using.
I am using walnut stained with deep ebony olympic stain. That was not my choice but the clients.
then don't know if the shellac will help on the grain.
