Hey Everyone,
I am sort of moving into model making right now. I have been looking around for a small laminate trimmer sized router that has a plunge base and can accept a variety of bits. Apparently, MicroFence Systems has this plunge base that you can put a laminate trimmer (Colt, PC, etc) and convert it into a plunge micro router. Unfortunately, this package comes at a cost. A single base Bosch Colt router and this plunge base is around $500.

I have been looking into a cheaper alternative. Trend has a variable speed plunge router that accepts a 1/4″ collet and has a plunge base for around $100.

What do you guys think about this router? Buy? Don’t Buy?

Probably get more responses from the Brits that have them.
Do you have 220V in your shop to run that router if you buy it?

Look up Stuart MacDonald.
They sell a plung base for luthiers for a good price that should fit your needs.

You are correct.
Stuart McDonald was a customer of mine years ago.
I didn't have time to look up the correct name this morning and only Stuart's came to mind quickly.

Hello everyone, thanks for replying. First, I don't have 220v but I believe that Trend also makes one for 110v. Second, I took a look at the Grizzly model and it looks like a good tool but I think that the Trend one looks a little bit better and has a few more creature comforts. Oh and, rarebear, I was actually looking at the the router you mentioned but don't you mean this one?http://www.woodworkingshop.com/cgi-bin/5306B1A2/mac/additmdtl.mac/showItemDetail?item=TD40000&qtyA=0&phsO=N&desc=TREND%20T4%20ROUTER&drpshp=N&alOrd=Y&iQty=.000&oQty=.000&initQty=1&assortParent=N&itemForSale=Y&styleName=&fixD=&face=.00&gftc=&stck=Y&prefS=&calledFrom=DS&ordInfo1=&ordInfo2=&ordInfo3=&ordMan1=N&ordMan2=N&ordMan3=N&persCode=&persReqd=&persLink=%20&shipRemaining=0&daysBetween=0&daysBetweenFix=0&monthsBetween=0Anyways, after you opened it and used it alittle, could you by all means, send me a little review? Either post here or send me a PM!Thanks!"Real Peace isn't just the absence of conflict but is the presence of justice"
Hoo Boy! happens to me all the time -- a casualty of aging, I suppose.
You might do better with a rotary cutter such as Dremel, or one of the knock-offs. Some come with a plunge router attachment, or you can buy it separately. The size is suited to model making, and you can also use it for carving, sanding etc.

Keep looking. If it's not the Trend brand, there's somebody else that has something similar sold in the US that's 110V. Not positive, but I might have seen it in a MLCS catalog. If I stumble across it I'll repost. I have that MicroFence base, and it's pricey but extremely well made and accurate (like the edge/circle guides). You can also get it to take a Dremel with an extra adapter.

Found it

If you build it he will come.

Grizzly sells what looks like a close copy of the Trend machine.

I just bought one of these Trend Routers from
http://www.woodworkingshop.com/cgi-bin/E1E964B2/mac/additmdtl.mac/showItemDetail?item=TD40000&qtyA=0&phsO=N&desc=TREND%20T4%20ROUTER&drpshp=N&alOrd=Y&iQty=.000&oQty=.000&initQty=1&assortParent=N&itemForSale=Y&styleName=&fixD=&face=.00&gftc=&stck=Y&prefS=&calledFrom=DS&ordInfo1=&ordInfo2=&ordInfo3=&ordMan1=N&ordMan2=N&ordMan3=N&persCode=&persReqd=&persLink=%20&shipRemaining=0&daysBetween=0&daysBetweenFix=0&monthsBetween=0
I have not had time to use it yet but was recommended by a friend that uses it for inlay work..
Might now be as high tech as the Micro but I think it will do the job for $99 :)
