Philter,
Immediately seal the end grain with latex paint, or Titebond glue or brushed on melted wax, if you don't, end checking will quickly wreck the log for cabinet wood. Saw the log up as soon as possible, no wood, to my knowledge, gets better by sitting in the log once the tree is down. Until it can be cut, keep it off the ground and out of the sun, try to store it some place that is cool and on the humid side.
