In an effort to learn about new words, I subscribe to a word of the day email. Reading the recent and past posts regarding sharpening, today’s word “pleoxenia” (excessive or insatiable covetousness, as in an insatiable need for what I already have) seemed to be very appropriate.
Woodworkers who have purchased many stones/jigs, etc on their quest for the ultimate sharp edge, can now dismiss others criticism by blaming it on their “pleonexic personality disorder”, from now on referred to as PPD.
So, the next time we are all faced with the decision as to whether or not to buy the “latest and greatest” sharpening device, we must stop and ask ourselves, is this my PPD flaring up or will this purchase really make a difference?
T shirts with ” My name is _________, I am a woodworker who suffers from PPD” emblazoned on the front available soon!
Kieran
PS: I will never reveal if I suffer from PPD myself.

I have always been careful when my 'homeostasis' is disturbed: referring to the fact that man prefers a stable environment he will do anything to achieve that state - e.g. buy a new car when the ashtrays are full. You can translate this to woodworking tools.

a most propitious post....
Well, being a one time scholar of Greek philosophy, I'll just point out that both pleonexia and homeostasis are Greek words written in the English alphabet. (Heck, even alphabet comes from Alpha Beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet). This type of trivia drove my students mad! This is my personal signature.
I had to take Latin! I loved it for whatever reason.. Never understood a word of it and was a Alter Boy (did understand because it had English on the facing page) in my youth!
Like my Math classes.. I did try to learn. Just never sunk in for some reason!
Haven't gotten to that word yet!
Good belly laugh on your post!
Thanks. I am just waiting for BossCrunk to chime in!
