I’m interested in any input on either a Jet or Grizzly 13″ planer/moulder. How are they for planing, snipe? and moulding? I notice they weigh approx. 250# which would make me think that they would be better than a portable 12″. Any comments would be helpfull.
Thanks Ken

Hi Ken,
I have the Woodmaster Model 712 Molder/Planer and am very happy with it. The snipe is about 2" on each end ,which can be reduced some by reducing the feed rate and taking a light cut. As far as molding it does a pretty god job of turning out moldings, better than moldings in lumber yards. You might want to check out the Woodmaster or RBI Molder /Planers,both of these companies only make Molder/Planers and have been making them for years. I paid about $1700.00 for mine, which includes shipping. The machine comes with a 5 year warranty that I doubt Jet or Grizzly has. Also it comes with a 5 HP motor and 1/6 HP variable speed motor for the feed rollers. If you plan on making mouldings you may want to get there accessory shaft with a custom knife holder for knifes up to 3 1/4", anything longer and you have to use the planner head. There are quite a number of stock molding knifes available and they can custom cut knives as well. Setting up the machine took some time, but once you get it setup it does a fine job.

Ken, I have the jet planer molder.Mine is the older model, open stand, blue paint. The newer ones are white , closed stand, more money. I haven't used it as a molder yet, but have planed at least 1000 ft of various hardwoods.Snipe is minimal, usually slight sanding will take care of it. I burned out a Dewalt 13" planer, hence the Jet with an induction motor.
I have not used the Grizzly molder planer, but own several Grizzly tools. If their planer is as good as their cabinet saw and 16" bandsaw, then the planer would be an excellent purchase. I am very happy with the Jet, does everything I ask it to do.Either one should be fine.

Thanks Mike for the reply. I've got a 20" planer (jet) that I'm going to sell And I make alot of moldings on my shaper thats why I'm thinking of the 13" planer/molder.
Thanks again.
I got the Jet 13'' machine about a year ago. I have not used it as a moulder yet, but I am very happy with it as a planer! If I use the slower feed rate, it produces a nice smooth surface. I liked the ability to make moulding ( if I want to ), but just haven't got any knives yet. I did hear some bad things about the "old style", but with whatever changes they made to the gear box, it works great now.
