Sorry if this in the wrong section but I will get right to it…
i am turning an old 12′ work bench into a outdoor dining table. The top is individual boards and are pretty weathered which is fine but it also seems to have some old oil and other muck soaked into the wood. My question is should I just use a belt sander or a planer to get down to clean wood? I plan on taking the table apart so I could take it to a local mill to have it planed down. Thanks in advance for the help.

Plane it but read the whole reply
If it is covered in some gummy mess planing is the quickest way to get down to bare wood. However, make sure you get any and all metal out of the way first. If you want to save some money a hand plane shouldn't take any longer than a trip to the mill.
