Peter,
My father and I used Constantine’s Penetrating Finish on a variety of projects for probably 25 years. I recently found the need to refinish a project and became aware that they had discontinued it. Got in contact with someone at the company and was told that you could buy it, but only in 25 gallon increments. Finally got an msds sheet on the finish, but it’s all Greek to me. Would you have any idea what was in that stuff or is there something on the msds that would help me mix my own. Thanks. Jamie

Jamie,
On the msds sheet the first ingredient you'll probably see is some type of modified tung or linseed oil I would think. In all probability you'll also see the word PROPRIETARY . This would be the ingredients that they want to keep a secret. It's possibly just a small amount of a resin to give the oil a little body.
There are a number of oils by different companies on the market. Why try and mix your own?
I've referred to Chris Minicks article recently that compares some of the oil products out there. Two that I've used are Liberon and Minwax antique oil. I don't like to promote any one's brand so don't think these are the ONLY two worth using.
It's funny how we finishers find something we like and then the rug is pulled out from under us. It pays to experiment.
Good luck and let us know what you tried in it's place.

Peter,
Are you telling me that I can substitute one oil for another. If so, I would be glad to use another in it's place. Jamie
Jamie,
Out of the two basic oil choices, one with a tung oil base would be my first choice.
Do a little research on the available products and see what will suit your needs.
Yes, you can substitute one for another.
