I made a bench from a lee valley print with a 1 and 3/4 top so I skirted the bench with 1 1/2 x 5 maple with a dog hole pattern on the skirt and the top 3/4 inch holes 7 3/4 on center.I was going to mount the tucker vise to the front of the bench using the dog holes in the skirt but I waited to long they have discontinued the tucker vise so I want to know from anyone out there if I can use a pattern makers vise on this skirted bench with out making a mess of it or should I rethink the front vise altogether.

I don’t see why not. You will have to cut out the skirt for the tilt mechanism. Mine has a 4 inch "skirt".
I looked at a vise that highland woodworking puts out and gets good reviews it is an imitation of an emmert what do you think.
I have seen the copies of the Emmert, they are not bad. I liked them better than the Tucker just because they are made of steel. The alloy that <!----><!----><!---->LV<!----><!----> uses just never seemed like vice material to me. The price difference is pretty significant too.
Alan, I installed the Highland Emmert vise clone in a 2 1/2" glued up hard maple top about a year ago. It's a good vise, it is a b1tch to install by yourself as it is over 50 pounds-just the rear face , hinge and hub must be 30 pounds. One author said that you will chisel away a bushel basket of chips to install it, THAT was an understatement!
It will put anything that you can secure in the jaws at almost any angle you can think of (the big jaws can pivot 5 degrees and there is an insert to give you 15 degrees more for big tapered legs etc.)the small jaws are really handy for metal work. It is not a quick release type so it is slower to work with boards.
You should go to the Highland web site and find the "additional info" just past the product description, it is a PDF of all parts with install instructions---AND -- the full size template to spot the 3/8" recess on the face of your skirt and the mortise for the top leaf of the hinge mount as well as the screw and bolt locations. Print and cut out the templet, fold it over the edge of your skirt and mark all the perimeter and screw/bolt holes. Then realize that the top marks need to be mover 3/8" deeper into/ across the bench to reflect the hinge recessed flush to the skirt face. This will let you see if you have a problem with where these are on the bench.
Being a belt and suspenders type guy, I would replace the two 1" #10 that hold the hinge to the bench skirt with ones long enough to get into at least 1" of real bench past the skirt and one say 6" on either side of the vise, counter bored into the face of the skirt. You will have a 50+ pound vise and the weight of say a 4x4x48 bench leg that you will pound on to make a mortise and you don't want it supported only by a skirt board.
If you do get this vise give me a shout as there are some things that will be helpful in fitting the hub and shaft assy in the bottom of the bench top.
If you don't opt for it , I recommend the Anant 53ed a very good vise. Paddy
A Pattern Makers Vice is something to mount.. Once done, it is a perfect solution
Apparently Lee Valley is going to come out with a new version of the Tucker Vise. I don't know when that will be but you may want to wait.

I spoke to someone at lee valley today and i could not find out anything.I don't want to cut and mortise the bench that was the nice thing about the tucker I could mount it to the skirt though the dog holes which are 7 3/4 inches on center, where did you here this rumor.
Alan,Rob Lee talks about it here.
