After cleaning and de rusting some of my very old tools,
the paint has started to flake off over time.
It feels like time to freshen up paint the old handles, and some of my planes.
I was wondering if a basic rust paint would suffice for such a thing?
or is there a different type of paint I should use? Since I am going to be handling the tools, is there any concern to purchase a paint that doesn’t contain a chemical that would not be good for my skin?
any thoughts are appreciated

The choice of paint might be influenced by whether you are trying to "restore" them (based on antique value), or just paint them. I would think that any good (modern, non-lead) enamel would suffice, but paintsperts might have better suggestions.
Assuming that this is not a restoration then I would limit myself to paints specifically formulated for iron.
Personally I always use Hammerite (I don't know if it is available in your part of the planet) but some may consider the colours to be a little too garish. The plus for Hammerite and similar paints is that they will happily go over rust. There might however be a compatibility problem with the existing paint.
Warning: High solvent content so you might want to work outside or use a mask. Read the application instructions carefully. Those guys mean exactly what they say.
