I’m building an arched cherry head board and trying to sand the curves smooth with an oscillating spindle sander, but when I do the sleeve rides up. I’m not quite sure what I’m doing wrong. Is there a magic way to use these? I’ve read the instruction manual and I’ve searched thru this site for answers and can’t find them. Perhaps I should not be trying to smooth the curves of such a large piece with the spindle sander. Any suggestions? I’m a relatively amateur woodworking so any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Mine has a nut on top of the rubber shaft that holds the sanding sleeve. Tighten the nut on the rubber part and the sleeve does not move.

"Mine has a nut on top..."It should also have a washer on both ends of the rubber contour. The idea is that the rubber is compressed between the washers, causing it to expand in diameter. Check that both of your washers are there first. If that doesn't work, try lightly sanding the rubber with some 220 paper to gain friction. If that still doesn't work maybe try adding a layer of duct tape to the contour.Just curious...what make/model spindle sander do you have?good luck

oops. sent the response to the wrong person.gk
the sander is a Delta BOSS.
thanks for taking the time to respond, I'll give your suggestions a try.
Your sleeve is loose. You shoe's untied. Just kidding. Tighten the compression nut on the top.
thanks, I should have done that first!!
I'm having trouble with my OSS in that sometimes the sleeves don't wanna come off. If you've got any advice on that one, I'd like to hear it.
try rubbing some talc (baby powder) on the drum before you put the sleeve on it.
try rubbing some talc (baby powder) on the drum ..........
But I don't have any babies in my shop.
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Loosen the tightening nut and roll it like a rolling pin on a flat surface. That usually loosenes them up.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Never heard of that one. I'll try it.
Majic.. NA. If I knew of some I'd be ALOT younger! Wipe off rubber off with a clean rag and make sure the sanding sleeve inside is clean.. I have a Ridgid that works great.. I 'think' pressing to hard on the sanding can cause it.. Be patient and.. Go slower and do not press to hard onto the sanding surface.. If a real issue make a wooden disk or a BIG metal washer to go over the rim of the sanding sleeve so it cannot move up!?
