WTH is organic furniture?
i know....that's why i posted
Trendy trendy trendy. I'm in agriculture and the trendy word of the year is "sustainable", which nobody's really defined yet, but apparently, in addition to being largely a load of crap, it's a really cool word to use in your marketing.
i guess it's old wood put to good use? however nice designs.
I like that organic steel they use in it, too. They must grow it from Ironwood.
I'd like to know what inorganic wood would be.ne sutor ultra crepidam: Disputantum Semirotten Woodworking
It is good that someone recycled potential fuel for heating, Its probably clasiffied organic due to the fact it was built with same axe used to cut down the tree originaly, which did not give off any off gases in the process. Definetly takes the fine out of wood working. Only Kidding, I love it .
Ever see the plastic photo "wood" paneling from China? Now THAT'S inorganic wood.
Trendy.....Marketing........
Here in the People's Republic of Shrewsbury, VT, we actually have an obnoxiously smug, off-the-grid, green sneakered, tree huggin' type selling "organic maple syrup".....
I have to admit that the word "organic" causes my knee to jerk up and smash me in my big fat mouth. Perhaps the only other word that elicits such an automatic response is "pristine".
Well, so you've got organic and pristine. Mark my words ......... "sustainable" will the word of 2008.
Does anyone have a vomit bag handy?
2008 ?!
Where you been livin' ? Here in the People's Republic we've been sustaining for years now, usually organically, and with regard to all things pristine.
Right, "sustainable" is soooooo 2004.

Ayuh.
As I said, us woodchucks have been subjected to sustainability in all its permutations for some time now.
And as you well know, with the crew we're saddled with in Montpeculiar, there just ain't no end in sight.....
Why even as we speak, my normally sane (relatively) employer is preparing for their big "sustainable slopes" event.
SIGH
Can't awit to hear what Howard has to say at the DNC! Should we all put our earmuffs on? Who knows, maybe he and John (Lynch) will perform a duet.........

I don't mean to come off sounding cocky or smart-***, but ain't all wood organic? I mean when I went to school anything that grew from the ground which, to my recollection, is just about all plant life, was organic.
Harry
Harry come on, Everyone knows organic is the new name for rustic.
perhaps, sustainable is a better word. nonetheless, that furniture starts at 6k and goes up.........
That may be sustainable but that isn't affordable so I wonder about the carbon offsets...........hmmm

I like less than have of you, half as much as you deserve.
"Organic" means carbon compounds regardless of their origin except for a few cases. It's a scientific term hijacked by the pop/commercial culture to sell stuff at a big markup.ne sutor ultra crepidam: Disputantum Semirotten Woodworking
The pictures do not do it any justice . The shapes are intresting.
Great!
Now I can recycle the boards in our 3 holer out in the woodshed and make a fortune!
Thanks,

Go Bob , This my interpatation of organic or at least as close as I get, the brown piece of wood came from my fire wood pile. Its an end table of mine.
Hey, how did you get a picture of me diving into the water?
Wow, that is gorgeous

Thanks, Two.
Now that is a lovely piece!
My interpetation of "organic " is a bit more simple. I have been making wooden toys out of firewood I took from my wood pile. Attached is a picture of a piece of curly maple that I "Saved from Smoke" only yesterday. Behind it is a 1/2 finished truck made from spalted maple and oak. I call my toys, "Firewood Toys" and all are a sandwich of contrasting woods. I think it gives the toy an interesting look. One item that I have sold a few of ( I've only been doing these for about a month) are wooden trains. I finish these toys in Watcos natural so there is nothing toxic on them. I was going to call them "Toys From Trees..... Not Chinese" but I opted out of that. While the firewood is essentially alnost free, the prep work that a piece of maple requires to get it to a working size takes a lot of time. Therefore it is cheaper to buy good wood but when you are competing with the Walmart pricing mentality you need a schtic (sp?). If the customer drives up in a Prius....he may want "green" wood"Wicked Decent Woodworks

Now that's cool!

I always wonder if stuff like that is interesting to anyone but me? Personally it is a favorite of mine.
thanks.
what's recycled wood?
Organic? I almost spit my coffee out looking at that. Green wood? Don't we need to dry wood first? Too funny. Great to use recylced wood. I've seen some very nice paneling made from onld barn wood. I had a green discussion with a co-worker tree hugger who was raving that she only ate "natural foods" and artificial stuff was killing us! I reminded her that cyanide is a natural ingredient that you would not want to ingest. She looked at me for a second and just walked away. We have a good exchage from time to time. I call her tree hugger and she calls me tree killer. I reminder her I don't do the killing, I just use the body parts.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Who really knows what the brochure means by organic. All vegetables are grown in the ground, but only some are "organic." More importanly, you should go and check out the price on those pieces...then you'll really spit our your coffee.
All vegetables are grown in the ground...........
What about sea cucumbers?
I took a minute to track down the website for the company that produced these pieces. You can get a much better idea of what they look like and their philosophy of woodworking.

Sometimes, I have to shake my head with disdain at the methods some folks use to promote their products. I didn't have thet reaction when I actually read the brochure for this furniture. They use the wood "organic" in the same way that one might use it to describe Maloof's work - that design reflects nature. They use sustainable methods and environmentally responsible processes when they construct their furniture. I don't see anything wrong with that. I more often find myself shaking my head when I hear people criticizing a philosophy that should bring people together. Sustainable practicies are real conservative behaviors (I'll leave it up to you to distinguish between other real versus not real conservative behavior) that promote conservative use of natural resources. Using natural resources in such a way that they are not available to successive generations, or in such a way that it degrades and pollutes the world we live is just simply stupid, selfish and lazy. To criticize those who work against such practices is frankly mind boggling.
I have a better organic wood picture. I'll bet it even has the Sears catalog(recycle)!

Organic, green, all-natural* Ho hum. Just a marketing pitch.
I remember someone posting a question that asked if she had organic latex mattress and organic wool pillows, would they be ruined if she did not use organic cotton sheets. This was probably from a person that could not pass a ninth grade science test if given to her today.
