Does anyone know a used tool source in the Chicago area? Are there worthwhile dealers in used tools at Kane County flea market, Grayslake, Sandwiche, etc.? Having seen the extensive collection at Liberty and similar stores in Maine, I’m wondering if there is anything comparable in the midwest?

Hi Larry,
Have you tried some of the dealers listed in the classified section of FWW? Here are the dealers and their websites:
Bob Kaune - Sells lots of Stanley, extensive collection listed!
http://www.antique-used-tools.com
Pete Niederberger - No website!, but does occasionally compiles a list for sale. His phone # is (415) 924 - 8403. His email is: [email protected]
Pennyfarthington Tools in England - haven't checked out there website.

Hope this helps! I've got a few oldies myself. Good Luck in finding a few gems!

I don't know any tool dealers in your neck of the woods, but I have a suggestion. I would recommend that you join the Mid-West tool Collector's Association. They are a great source of information, as well as tools. They hold semi-annual meetings, including one at the end of Sept. in St. Louis. The website is:www.mwtca.org.
I'm a member of the South-West Tool cCollector's Association, and I've benefitted a lot from being a member.
Good luck on your hunt for tools!
Thanks -- I'll check that out.

Glad you put the name to it. A good friend has been or is the president of it and travels to ALL the meetings. His workshop is gorgeous.Gretchen
Larry, there's a guy in Scotland called Andy Stephens runs an old tool business with a really good mail order service. I've used him a a number of times and have always been very pleased, I do know that he sends stuff world wide. So Ok maybe a premium associated with shipping but based upon my experience I'd give it a look.
all the best Iain

Have you considered eBay? There is a constant supply of old planes, although most are scarfed up by collectors. It's a shame to see good hand tools go into this black hole, instead of staying in use. I have managed to buy a few tools, and occasionally the prices are right. But you have to check every 5 days or so, or you'll miss a good deal. That is, if the last minute snipes don't out bid you.
