Does anybody else find these new “flash” ads on this website (like the Steel City ad) really annoying? Feels to me like there is someone screaming at me, “Hey, look at me!!! Look over here. Hey!”. I often go to to FW.com to relax at the end of my day and I find these ads annoying enough to cancel my subscription. Anybody else feel the same way?

I'd like them better if they had hot babes.
Note to Taunton: I'm a sucker for black hair.

Flash ads? I never see any.
Perhaps you can eliminate them by setting up a pop-up blocker at your end. I have set up my computer with a couple of these, and perhaps that is why I don't see these Flash ads to you talk about? Slainte.

Richard,
Yes, the pop-up blocker is the answer.
I did struggle a little while with my security software (ZoneAlarm) to find the right combination of allow/disallow switches for all the facilities on the Taunton site. It took a while to get flash videos to run from all pages, for example.
But it's worth it. Although I accept the necessity of ads from the point of view of the Taunton balance sheet, if I can avoid them I do.
But what if I miss an exciting new gubbins!? Doh!
Lataxe, a rabid consumer.
Neither do I.
Rich
My popup blocker must be working better than I thought 'cause I've never gotten a popup ad on any Taunton website.
Does cable TV have anything like a popup blocker? I would be very interested in blocking commercials that include:
-Billy May
-Vince ?? (Sham Wow)
-Three (or more) repetitions of a toll free phone number
-The phrases "But Wait!!, "Operators are standing by!!", or "Call in the next XX minutes".
I've missed the second half of a lot of shows because of Billy Mays' screaming. The pitch of his voice is actually painful to me. So, when he starts...I switch!
Dave,
Come to Blighty where there is the BBC, which doesn't allow adverts. Well, except for the trailers advertising it's own coming-programmes.
Alternatively, take the lump hammer and apply it to the infernal one-eyed thang. The fact is, television sucks out your mind and replaces it with a producer-consumer ideology perpetrated by [censored by the gubbins-selling and pro-gew-gaw bureau].
Lataxe, who still watches David Attenborough on the goggler-machine, despite his body-twitching delivery. (His fine and informative talking makes up for it).
lataxe,
it's been years since i've watched any tv. not one minute of this do i regret. i have, however watched a good many bbc documentaries. the video store where i rent stocks all the hard-to-get stuff, which i love. have you seen the bbc's "THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES"? you brits are fortunate to have the bbc. american television is mostly about selling stuff to consumers. to be fair, hbo puts out some interesting programs. i rent these sometimes.
eef
by the way, david attenborough is a joy to watch. jitters and all.

Eef,
I 'm gladdened that you have discovered Mr C and his fine visual essays. "Power of Nightmares" is an illuminating exposition that should be shown to all Polecat News watchers and other scaredy-cats. Try also "The Century of the Self" and "Pandora's Box". In fact, any of his oeuvre.
Lataxe, not reading The Daily Frightener.
Thanks for the invite, old sport, but I think that I'll stay on this side of the pond in sunny CA.I'm not sure what a "lump hammer" might be, but I confess to sometimes dreaming of locking and loading the 12 ga and lighting up Billy May or Vince Whatsisname. (We can still do that sort of thing here although it's usually frowned on. - lol)Since I'm an Olympic-class couch potato, I'll settle for pressing the MUTE button on the TV clicker. Thank goodness I can find it without looking - the lettering was worn off long ago.Well, time for lunch and back to the shop. I have a table to build next week and I'm making the template for some inlay work on the top.Cheerio
Yeah Dave , Those cable commercials are stupid , what in the world am I gonna do with 3 sets of Ginsu knives " and theres more "
regards dusty ,a sap sucker often times boxmaker
dusty,
Don't tell me you don't like the ShamWow guy? Like the little kid in the highchair hustling stock.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Everything about the "ShamWow guy" is annoying!! The fast talk, accent, appearance, gestures, and facial expressions. He shoulda been drowned at birth and his mother slapped upside her head. - lol
Dave,
I guess he doesn't annoy me cause he's a lot like many of the guys who live here in Kidderville, 'cept me of course. Who knows maybe the edge Vince has is that I can't smell him.
His mom says hi by the by.
:-)

How do you think us Yanks would react to a goverment Television Tax for viewing state funded and controled programing? There would be roaming vans that would electronically monitor televisions in order to determine compliance. This is the English model. I think the cable industry here would love it!
Man don't say that to loud.

The Ginsu knives I can do without, but I saw a show on Modern Marvels(?) about ceramic knives from Kyrocera in Japan.Someday - if I work up my nerve - I'll check out the price. - lol
