Hi Folks,
A friend has oak wood floors that are 18 months old.
He has five coats of poly on them. He just washed the
floor for the first time (Yes – he’s a bachelor!). He use
a mild soap (not sure what) with water & when the floor
dried he says that the floor lost its shine.
My first thought was that water went between the boards
and was absorbed thru the edge grain. But the lost sheen is
consistent and not just concentrated along the edges.
Any thoughts on the cause and possible cures aside from
adding a new coat of poly?
Thanks!

Two possibilities: There was wax on the floor and it was removed by the washing, and/or there's a soap film on the floor.

I'd also find out what the heck that supposed "mild soap" was, just to be sure.
I use Murphy's Oil soap on my hardwood floors. It leaves them clean, with a nice, satin sheen. You friend probably has a soap film.
One cleaning in 18 months is not bachelor-like, it's neanderthalic. Tell him to hire a house maid.

I have been really happy with the results using Bonakemi Swedish Floor cleaner. The floor will be squeaky clean and shinny as all get out after its use. Available here http://www.bonakemi.com/shop/products.asp
