I have a lot of stored wood, but nothing to build! I am looking for something with a little carving made out walnut, cherry, ash or oak. I have made a lot of Arts & Craft tables, bookcases, and dressers. Also Queen Ann stools and Chippendale Secretaries. What are your favorite things to build? I give my pieces to my family and relatives and never make anything twice, and normally spend 100-150 hours on each piece. Appreciate your thoughts.

Oldtool,
So you want something interesting to make. How about a schrank? A big German "closet"-type chest that is so big that it can't get through the door. -- So they are built in sections: a top, a bottom, two sides, two doors and a back. The mechanisms to join the sections are big sliding dovetails. You can decorate the schrank with carving, paint, or carve them, or paint them or ...... IF you want to learn Bauernmalerei, the old German style of decorative painting, you could do that too. The options are endless. They are real conversation starters. Indeed, four people could have a conversation inside of one.
There is an artist named Scottie Foster who has a book out on how to paint a schrank. For some impressive photos, go to:

I believe these were originally to hold a woman's stuff that she would bring to her new home when she married. So if you have someone in the family who is about to marry, it might be timely.
You were looking for different ideas. Now you have one. I am sure you'll get a lot more. Have fun.

Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
Just a quick glace, but I liked that. I have made 3 Penn. paints chests over the years with the painting, etc. My daughter is a painter also so maybe I can get her help. thanks.
Go fishing, maybe you need a break.
Hey that gives me some ideas: build a boat, make a new tacke box, how about a camp stool, or even a bamboo fly rod..........
I never thought about a tackle box, but it reminded me I could use a carving cheisel box. Last weekend I purchased 15 nice carving cheisels at an auction for $60 and still grinning with joy. Later in the day, I bid and got 18 more for $35 and came with a wall rack. These were not as good, but still great bargin. Thanks for the idea.
