I am searching for a way to remove the gloss from a shellac finish. I like to use shellac inside drawers and boxes to eliminate the odor of other finishes, but don’t like the glossy look. I realise that I could use an abrasive to remove the gloss, but the shine will show in the pores of the wood and in corners. Is there an additive that can be mixed in with the shellac that will accomplish this?

Several online suppliers sell a matting agent that you mix with shellac to kill the gloss. woodfinishingsupplies sells it.
Thanks Bob. I will follow up.
You can also buff with #000 steel wool, which will leave a more satin finish.
I have used the matting agent from Jeff Jewitt with much success. Also, try wiping it with a TSP solution. Seems to me my wife did this to knock the shine off shellac used to seal in a faux finish.
Thanks for the info. I have not had any luck locating a source. Can you give me an email or other address for Jeff Jewett?

Look toward the bottom of the page for the flattener. There is a limit to the amount of flattener yuo can add. I suggest pouring off a small, measured quantity of shellac, then adding flattener in varying amounts and test.
Jewitt can answer any questions much better than I. He seems to be very helpful.
Thanks, this is just wwhat I'm looking for.
