Noisy Router Table Suggestions
Our two router tables have open bases. I would like to do some thing to reduce the screaming noise they make. The walls and floors are cement block and concrete. There both the same and high end so replacing them is not likely an option.
I was thinking of enclosing the bases. How much quieter will they get ? I do wear hearing protection but when two machines are running its still louder than I like.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks

Putting the routers in a cabinet will definitely help. As will getting a decent router. I threw out the Porter Cable 690's a long time ago and went with Bosch 1617's.
The soft start and the engineering make for a way quieter machine.

I have a PC and a Bosch. Both make noise!
I use 2 inch fridgid foam insulation, I'M NOT sure it helps that much...
Just an interesting sidenote - my Freud router seems to run at a different pitch than the rest of my routers - not the regular, shrill scream.

Is the router table made of out of wood ?

A high pressure laminate. The routers are both the PC 31/4/hp. I have several personal routers that are quieter in the same local and with the same bits, just as a experiment.thanks Ron in Peabody
Hi Ron,
I didn't have laminate router table, but I switch from wooden to cast iron table. I made this out of spare wings. The noise is much less.

Ron ,
I also have ,like many do,the 3 1/4 hp PC in my table. Mine is enclosed and I originally lined the inside of the cabinet with some sound deadening board. I recently replaced that with some acoustical ceiling tiles. If you do this you need to leave a space of at least 1/2" behind the tiles for effective sound deadening( At least that was according to my acoustical sealing contractor friend that I consulted with) This does reduce the noise significantly. If you really want to be fanatical about reducing the noise you could find some special noise canceling board that they use in sound proof rooms( The cone shapes) You could also line the inside of a cabinet with the open side of some fiberglass wall insulation. That would very effectively kill most of the noise but would be a little messy when it gets filled with saw dust, so you would have to have some real good dust collection to go with it. Also you need to remember that if you enclose your router, remember to leave an opening for your router to draw air thru the motor for cooling. You know how hot those motors get! Hope this give you some ideas to toy with.
Thanks for your insight.
The tables have lifts and dust collection from the fence opening and below the table. It sounds like I can build the cabinets for storage and line the router/lift with the soundproofing. Thanks to every one who replied.Ron in Peabody
Hi RonComing in here a bit late, I know but just a suggestion, I tried to silence a router in a table for ages until I clicked onto shot bearings. That did more than all the acoustic stuff I tried.wotI started out with nothing...and I still have most of it left!
Thanks ,that's a suggestion that needs to be examined more closely. Ron in Peabody

In theory, seems like should get results similar to plans for enclosing shop vac in cabinet. For quick and dirty change, you might simply wrap with pieces of 4x8x2" styrofoam from big boxes.
