I have been preparing a zebra wood countertop, and have run into something unusual to me. I used my jack plane to flatten the top after gluing. Before sanding, I used my 9inch smoothing plane. I was getting good shavings, but I noticed section of the top revealed almost a sponge-like effect–little holes. They appear to be deep nough that I cannot sand them out. Any ideas?

You might have hit some spalt or something. When I run into these issues I get some of that Moser's clear drying grain fill stuff. If you coloring the wood, do that first, then the grain fill. Otherwise, just scrape it on and sand it off. Might take a couple doses to completely fill the pores.
