turned out o.k.
I stained several pieces and then went brain dead on two pieces. They were not dry and I sprayed them with Defthane poly. Next day all was well. They looked fine.
Did I perhaps find , by mistake, a way to speed up the finishing process.
I assume all went well because both products were oil based.

Time will tell.
This often works because the two layers are fresh enough to combine and work (dry)as one. It is riskier than normal but pros are often in a hurry and often do it. Standard pro strategy is to wait until the stain flashes off (when the surface dulls but is still NOT dry) and then spray from further than normal misting finish onto the surface and gently lowering the gun to get a normal spray. This works much better when spraying as otherwise it is too easy to move/remove/wash off, the stain coat. The guy who invented the airbrush was looking for a way to layer water colors and this works the same way.
