I made this bench so that it will be heavy & stable. In the picture you’ll notice I used 7” wide block. I added the lathe weight & motor weight ) I am using the 6 block 40 lbs each & a heavy top 45 lbs each foot weighs 15 lbs the lathe is 65 lbs & the motor 40 lbs it is about 450 lbs the shelf is 1 1/2″ thick & will give me some place to store lathe stuff & will also go through the left side block about 14″ to hinge the 3/4 hp motor off of. Unfortunately the motor that I have turns the wrong way so I need to let it hang further out on the left end & it is not reversible. But it may be easier to shift the belt with the motor out where I can get to it. So this may be a blessing in disguise. Each side of the stand is held together with a ½” rod run down through the block & foot & threaded on each end & nuts & fender washers. This lathe designed & manufactured in the 30’s by Delta is very basic it has needle bearings on both ends of the head stock just like the front end on a rear drive car. There is no plastic anywhere on this lathe. It works great.

Looks like it will do the job well, but for heaven's sake put a guard over the belt and pulleys!
I would like to put a guard on it. It has to cover the top step pully but leave the outboard end open so it's going to take a little design work. So far I have my hands on the tool the sandpaper or the off switch. It's a little like the other guys running a table saw with out a guard.
