I bought Grizzley Japanese style chisels on the advice from Chris Gochnouz’s article “Bench Chisels” from Sept/Oct 2008. In the article he wrote, “the handle must be mushroomed over to set the hoop”.
How do I do that?

hi patti,
insert the chisel, handle side up, in a steel vise. be careful about the business end being sharp and exposed. with a steel hammer, tap the wood that protrudes above the hoop until it squashes, bends over, mushrooms. all this so that the hoop seats and does not fall off.
best wishes
eef
ps
be sure not to clamp the handle in the vise. you'll want to the steel of the chisel.

Patti,
Light tap wood handle or put in vise and compress just the handle tip - (CAREFULLY) enough to slip iron ring on and then drive down the iron ring a bit-1/16 to 3/32, Lightly tap around edge to keep ring from falling off then suspend inverted into a soaking solution (oil or water) . After wood has swelled, clamp chisel (NOT Handle) and gently start tapping with a hammer around the exposed edge, gradually and evenly going around it. Keep this up until you have a good base starting to fold over the iron hoop. This your mushroom. Let dry, seal with varnish or shellac. Done. There are variations in procedure but this gives you the gist.
