I am in the process of building a shop in one end of my 2 stall garage. I need to share the woodworking area with my other hobby of restoring cars. Is there a way I can make a temporary mount for my iron vise and bench grinder on my work bench? I’m going to store them beneath the bench and would like to be able to pull them out and mount them securely on the bench top without having to bolt them down. Any ideas?

For the grinder, how about a bench hook arrangement, maybe with some of that router pad stuff on the bottom to keep it from sliding sideways? Another possibility would an appliance lift, examples at http://www.cabinetstorage.com/cssteps.htm
A lot of the operations I do in my metalworking vise involve significant force, bending, hammering, tapping, etc. I think I would install threaded inserts in the bench top and mount the vise on something fairly stout, like a chunk of microlam. Then if you're doing something vigorous you can run the screws in, or if you're doing something light duty, just the weight of the vise will hold it in place. The threaded inserts save having to fumble around under the bench top trying to get the washers on and the nuts started.
If your bench has dog holes, mount the vise to a 3/4" plywood base and screw 3/4" diameter short (1/2") wood dowels to the bottom of the base to match the dog hole pattern. Gravity will hold the base down and the dogs will keep it in place.

If your bench has an end vise, you can mount your metal working vise in a frame that is clamped to the bench using the end vise.
Mounting the grinder on a subbase that is held by your face vise is one way to go with this machine.
Lastly look at some way to protect your bench from metal shavings otherwise you have a risk of getting rust stains on your wood work projects.
Thanks for all the tips. I need to rethink the grinder a bit as the metal shavings issue is a big one. I might just leave it on its stand and find a good spot for it.
