I’m just now seriously thinking about dusting off my shop tools and building furniture. I would appreciate feedback on moisture meters i.e., their necessity, best for the money, etc. Many thanks.

The least used tool I've ever owned, fwiw. I don't even know where mine is. Must have been lost in a move. Can't remember the last time I used it - it's been years.
Instead of comparison shopping for a moisture meter, I'd spend my time finding a lumber dealer you can trust to provide top quality stuff for your operation, hobby, or whatever.
I really can't imagine not having a moisture meter with me when picking lumber at the mill. I have on several occasions avoided taking lumber that had too high of an EMC or that had such extreme variation of EMC in a board that it would be a mistake to use. Things can happen and mistakes can be made at any mill, even if they are honest mistakes.
I also use a moisture meter on my own stockpile to see where I am as for determining expected expansion/contraction rates for a project.

I'm with J S on this one. I'm not as concerned with what the content at the lumber yard is as what it is after I get it to my wood-rack. I am a hobbyiest so I don't have dead-lines and can buy well in advance. But I won't work it regardless till I get it where I want it. If it doesn't fit my plans, the plans get changed till it does.
Go to FG's post as most work fine if you are still interested.

Thanks to all for your expedient responses and especially to forestgirl for directing me to helpful information/discussions.
I concur with those that feel a moisture meter is not exactly top priority. However, some years back, FWW had an article on building one out of basic electronic components. I have only very basic soldering skills and I was still successful at completing the project. I don't have access to my FWW collection at this time but I recall the project was featured back in 1988 or '89. It came out in one issue with some correction a couple issues later. Was cheap and even fun to build. That being said, I only use it once in a blue moon.
