I am in the market for a moisture meter. Which companies should I be looking at and how much do they cost, roughly? I am a hobbyist so I do not need the top of the line.

I've used one of these for over 20 years.

I've had the same one for about a year and so far so good. Definitely has been worth the investment.
Good luck.

thanks for the knowledge,
I'm a long time user of the miniligno. Very happy with it
Lignomat or Delmhorst, IMHO. Depending on what you want to use it for now, and down the road. I got a Delmhorst J-lite, to which I can add a probe later on (to reach deep into the piles of lumber that I'm not likely to have, LOL). Would like to get a pinless meter one of these days, to take to the lumberyard.

My main use for a meter is checking piles of lumber either at the yard or before they're off-loaded from a truck. I use a pinless meter from Wagner which is really no-hassle and accurate enough for that purpose. About $100.

Be aware of the limitations of pinless meters. They need a smooth surface and may not have the same range. Beyond that look at how you will calibrate for the various species you will be testing . . . to me a very important feature.
