I’m about to build my kitchen cabinets and it calls for nearly 100 drawer slides, gulp!
That’s a major chunk of jung especially when you are cheap but like nice.
Any suggestions where they are affordable if bought in quanity?

A few sheets of Baltic birch will do you nicely. You can even cut dovetails if you want to. If you really want to go the solid wood route, then find an inexpensive tiama. Don't you have any beams left over that you can cut down on a bandsaw?..or wide flooring material? I seem to remember that you got really good prices on the hardwood you used on your house and that you had tons of it already on the property.
Another suggestion, please don't freak out, is European prefab (God forgive me) plastic drawer sides. You can get them wherever European cabinet parts are sold. JL
oops You said drawer slides, not drawer sides...I need to get my glasses.
Make wooden under drawer slides and get the plastic guides that fit into them. It will cost peanuts. If you really want mechanical slides, there are excellent European plastic slides available now for a reasonable price, and some decent metal slides for a bit more change. Again, the European cabinet hardware supplier in your area will surely have what you need.

jeanlou,
Ah! the ones I'm seeking have this neat feature where you get them close to closed and they automatically suck themselves smoothly closed.
I saw them I think in Lee Valley/veritas catalog but for like $30.00 each! For the sizes and capacities I'll need..
I can buy them from my local cabinet shop for $5.00 each but they seldom have more than a pair at a time for sale.. and I don't know how to read them to determine if they have the capacity I require.

Try this link Frenchy, and see what it turns up. The prices are very good.
By the way, the self closing slide simply has a flared end...it should not be that expensive. JL

jeanlou, thanks that's exactly what I was looking for.. you guys are great!
frenchy,This is a wholesale place I have been buying from for years -- right near the UofM main campus:JAECKLE MINNESOTA
504 MALCOM AVE. SE SUITE 100
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 55414-3312
(800) 292-4126
(800) 442-7214 FAX
http://www.jaecklewholesale.comTheir web site is lousy, but they carry a full line of the Grass hinges/drawer slides, Accuride, Amerock, etc. Also, they don't have much of a showroom; you pretty much have to know what you want, but the prices are good (maybe half what you would pay for Accuride at Rockler, or the Blum stuff (virtually the same as Grass). The local number is 612-676-0388.You have to have an account with them, but I have a COD arrangement, and would be glad to give you the info.EDIT: Grass probably makes them by now, but the slides you are asking about are the Blum Tandems, and I have a source for those as well (in Plymouth).********************************************************

Thansx john, I will
hey frenchy, if you are in canada ( an assumption , i know) check out Dayvan. they're a wholesaler in toronto, and stuff there is usually about half price from what the homeless depot sells for. you do need to be registered as a business tho.
Nah. I am the Canadian...sort of. I'm Quebecois. Frenchy is all American. JL
Frenchy
Pleased to be of service. I knew that the prices would interest you, and they even tell you the capacity of the slides. JL
jeanlou
Thanks - that is a great website to bookmark - a good source for inexpensive, but good quality, drawer slides.
aj kelly
I was glad to help out. JL
Frenchy, sounds like you need to set up a wholesale account somewhere!
You know any cabinetmakers that'd cut you a deal?
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl,
I'd like to trade some wood for some slides if I could, ;-) but what the heck!
I haven't bought in bulk cheap, but I id find decent discounts on eBay. Bought a bunch of tandem plus slides for about 25% less than the catalog places. Sure, it still hurt, but the slides are oh so nice.
100 slides? Boy, you better find a 7-11 to rob.
Look into http://www.woodworkersupply.com
Their price is excellent, I would recommend full extension slides. It is easier to find them in their catalogue than on line. Go on line to order a catalogue. You can order 24/7 and will only take 2-3 days to receive.
screename56
Thanks I just did order it..
I can't get this link ( http://www.woodworkersupply.com ) to work ....
http://www.woodworker.com takes me to a company named Woodworker's Supply - is this the same company?
aj kelly
AJ,
Yes, woodworker.com is woodworkers supply
Lee
Just bought a bunch of 18" full extension slides rated a 100# for $4.90 per pair when you by 10 or more pairs. Got them from an Amish supply house in Baltic, Ohio. The name of the company is Hershberger's Hardware Ltd. Tel 1-800-734-8044 or Fax 1-800-698-3200 no web site as they are Amish and have no electricity in their wharehouse. Telephone is answered off site by an English person, anyone not Amish is English. No name brand on them but they work real smooth. Hope this helps
mrbird90,
thank you I certainly will consider them.
http://www.cabinetparts.com ? I haven't looked at all the other suggested sites, but these guys seemed to have great prices when I had to buy 5 dozen Blum hinges etc. They start with lower prices than other places I found, and then give an additional 10% for quantity. They carry Accuride, Blum, etc. Service was great. However, I don't think they carry shellac.
Ah, BobMc, you've been following the shellac thread.I can't help but ask, though - Frenchy, what finish are you going to use on your kitchen cabinets - waxed or unwaxed? (NOT a frivolous question, as I STILL want to use shellac on my planned kitchen cabinets).Mike D
Mike-D
The only time I use unwaxed shellac is if I'm gonna put another finish on top of the shellac..
So the answer is waxed Bulls Eye! on my kitchen cabinets.. (SWMBO and I are still debating about the countertop. I want to be cheap and do a butcherblock for everything except around the sink where we switch to granite, she wants to be cheap and do formica for everything)..
frenchy,
If you don't need full extension slides then I'd recommend using the standard 3/4 ext. Blum glides, and machine the Blumotion cylinders into the bottom of your drawers (assuming you're using solid 5/8 bottoms). Use a spacer to get your clearances right on the back. This should give you the soft close that the expensive $30 Tandem glides provide, at about $10/pr. Or just buy put the Blumotion cylinders into the cabinet sides - against the drawer fronts.
Nathan
Alright!
Pictures when you're done?
