Does anyone have any thoughts on mixing a stain with tung oil to add a bit of color when desired, foregoing the seperate staining process?
I just did this with the pine leg assembly for a router table I’m building, and it seems to have worked fine. I added a bit of Zar oil-based Natural Teak stain to some Formby’s low-gloss Tung Oil, and it added a pleasing tinge of color without noticeably changing the properties of the oil.
I’ll probably use this finishing technique again in the future, unless someone can tell me why it’s a dumb idea.

Formby's Tung Oil Finish contains no tung oil at all. It is a thinned varnish. But, that's not answering your question.
There is no problem with mixing an oil stain with an oil based varnish.
*You sure about that? I was pretty sure I read on the packaging that it did contain tung oil... that's not to say it's pure tung oil, I know it's not. Color me shocked if it's just a thinned oil varnish... I've used oil-based marine varnishes quite a bit and this stuff (Forby's, whatever it is) doesn't handle anything like the other varnishes I've used.Whatever it is, I do like it!
