I’m looking for a smooth cutting, cross cut blade for my 12″ miter saw. I was looking at Freud’s LU85 which sells for $114, when I found an Avanti blade (also made by Freud), 96 tooth, 12″, for only $70. My question is, what accounts for the huge difference in price and will the Avanti do as good a job as the Freud? Thanks.

Without having done an actual test of the blades I can't say whether or not the Avanti blade would cut as well as the Freud, but it is likely that right out of the box the cuts would both be good.
What you are getting with the more expensive blade is better quality steel in the plate and more sophisticated treatment of the plate to help keep it flat in use. The second likely improvement is in the quality of the carbide and the size of each tooth. The more expensive blade will have a better grade of carbide, which will stay sharp longer, and each tooth will be larger allowing the blade to be resharpened several times before it is worn out. The more expensive blade may also have been sharpened with state of the art machines creating a sharper and more precisely shaped tooth profile.
The bottom line is that both blades will most likely cut equally well initially but, in the long run, the more expensive blade will give you better service and a longer life if you use it a lot.
Hope this helps, John White
Thanks John. Your observations are right on. The carbide is about .050" smaller than the more expensive blade and there are fewer expansion slots cut into the blade. That being said, I think the less expensive blade will serve my perposes and give me $45 to spend on other tools!
