Hi there,
about two years ago I received a beautiful Japanese chisel from Misugi-Design as a gift (I think it was called a “swordsteel” chisel). I understand they are now out of business – but is there another store that has taken over from them and will be able to get chisels from the same maker ? Can someone help me identifiy the maker and locate a source if I post a picture ?
Thanks a lot
Patrick

Kayoko closed Misugi so she could take care of sick friend and also care for her mother in Japan. Hida is who she recomends, they also got her stock before closing, http://www.hidatool.com/

Much appreciated - I'll contact them !ThanksPatrick
I enjoyed speaking with her but every time I called, to for sure order something, the prices were simply breath taking and inevitably I would turn around with my tail between my legs. So. If buying her old stock gird your loins and your pocket book.

Oh as far as identifying what you have I may help. I have several of her old catalogs with descriptions. Mostly pen and ink drawings etc. But fire away with a photo and I will give it a go. I doooo really like my Japanese tools.

Well, it took me some time but here are some pics of my favourite chisel ...
God I like Japanese chisels !> I think it was called a "swordsteel" chisel<OK things seem to be clicking into place. I was going to ask you whether the handle looks to be Red Oak or Tagayasan wood ( apparently a member of the Rosewood family )But now that I have come back and reread your first post that your chisel is suposed to be the swordsteel designation and your photo doesn't look to me like red oak I think it is safe to say you most likely have the swordsteel version. The other option is the "white steel " with the red oak handle. Now please tell me how wide it is and I can tell you the price if you like. It is approximately $116 for the 24mm up to $150 for the 30mm size. The 48mm is $249The maker is listed as Chuttaro Imai ( third generation chisel maker w. 47 years experience )Carbon content 1.2 - 1.35 %
Rockwell hardness 64cThere should be one hollow on the back side ( double or triple hollow available upon request )rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )

Have you properly prepared the top of the chisel ?The top should have a mushroom of wood fibers above the metal ring. Your hammer ( or mallet ) should never strike the steel ring.Especially on the chisels from several years ago and older it was up to the customer to remove the ring, fit the ring so wood extended above the ring, then use the chisel wet to form the wood into a dome above the ring.I can send a link for how to do this if you need it.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
