I have been given a few bucks to get a lathe. I have been looking at the rikon, delta and jet midi-lathes. in terms of projects, I am thinking about doing some tool handles, drawer pulls, an acorn birdhouse, small bowls and table legs. Any recommendations? +/- to the brands/models I mentioned? thanks-Eric in OC

The Penn State Industries lathes got excellent review in Workbench a few months ago. They have bed extensions and duplicator attachments available. 40" between centers with a bed extension, and good price. Check them out.
I have got a Jet Mini lathe which suits most of my turning projects which are mainly boxes, small bowls, boxes and some tool handles. the only regret is the length of stock which can be turned when doing spindle work. General makes a slightly larger model I believe.I would recommend a Nova Chuck for holding work , as it saves time screwing or gluing material to a faceplate.
Good luck
The Jet Mini will work well, But If you plan on doing chair or table legs you will have to opt for the bed extension which is about $80. Jet also has a package out that includes a Nova chuck.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
