In the Audio Slideshow of the above name William Robertson refers to an unknown wood from which he carved a mirror frame. He called it white thorn wood. Would this be a white hawthorn wood.
Its often used to make an ‘Irish’ walking stick called a Shill-ay-lee. I spell it fo-net-e-cally cause I can’t spell it for real but i can assure anyone curious out there that they are never used in Ireland. Never. Ever…
The material is put to much better use by Mr Robertson if it is the same…

I don't think an authentic shilelagh would be of much use as a walking stick!
I always thought they were made of Blackthorn which is a sort of spiny shrub.
