Anyone have advice for a good metal detector to use to scan old wood beams for nails and other metal before running through woodworking machines?

Maybe a friend's band saw?
Just kidding, of course. At least as far as my friends know....
Seriously, though, I use a Little Wizard II detector I purchased for around $30-$35. Detects nails, screws, and the like to around 1" depth, deeper for larger metal items. Has not failed me yet, though I don't have frequent need for its use, either.
A contractor friend says he has a Zircon product that he uses in similar fashion; I don't know the name of the particular item, but I think he said the cost of it was more or less the same as the Little Wizard II I have. (BTW, the company that makes the Little Wizard II also makes a larger, more expensive, and more sensitive device, if I recall correctly.
I have the Little Wizard II as well and it works fine, as long as you take your time with it. You can't just wave it over a board, but rather have to go slow and keep it close or right against the wood.
I use a Little Wizard also, though seldom have the need.
Lumber wizard first, followed by a block of rare earth magnet on a string. I just pass it over holes and dark spots watching for a "pull"... very effective.
