What do the symbols next to the message mean? Star, dot and a dot outlined on one side three times? Some of my messages appear only when I hit the folder title.

The star indicates a thread that has new posts since the last time you looked at it.
The dot is a message with no new posts since the last time you looked at it.
The dot with the 3 )'s is the message you're currently viewing.
If a message you posted doesn't show up when you first visit, it's because there are no new posts in it.
Look at the top of the left-hand frame where it says Show discussions.... You can choose to display "Unread Messages" or "Unread Messages to Me" or "Of High Interest." (There are other choices, but these are the ones I use the most often). The High Interest will have all of the discussions you posted in or designated high priority.
