Hey to everyone. I’m new to the forum and I’m looking for some sound advice. I’m a contractor/DIY but somewhat new to woodworking.
Here’s my question:
I’m planning on building an upholstered storage ottoman for my family room. (I have a 9 mos. old daughter and the existing glass top table gives my wife the shakes) Anyway, I was thinking about using A/C plywood for the frame (basically a box on wheels) and for the lid. My concern is the plywood could warp overtime – especially on the lid. Should this be a concern and if so then what material should I use?
Thanks in advance,
-Solan

Solan,
If I were to make such a project I wouldn't use A/C plywood. My choice might be (and remember I don't know anything about your design) brown maple solid wood, or maybe some baltic birch ply. . I'm no Home Depot fan, but I have used some of their maple/birch 3/4" ply for paint grade projects. It has worked out just fine, and saved me $30 off A/1 cabinet grade ply I could get elsewhere. I understand that your project isn't painted, but it is covered. So I think it would work out.
I stay away from using construction grade materials in furniture. The moisture content after the kiln is higher. And I don't have a moisture meter at this time. So it can be a bit more risky for me.
My brother fell threw a glass table top when he was little.. Wasn't pretty.. You're making a wise choice.
GRW,Thanks for the advice. Well taken. I think I'll try the birch ply from Home Desperate.Regards,Solan
The leather ottomon I purchased is built on a 2x2 frame with MDF panels for the sides. The top is only a 2x2 frame with those nylon mesh straps (I think they are nylon?) stapled to the frame and weaved together to support the seat cushion.
I have also seen storage window seats made with cabinet grade plywood.
I would say you could go eaither way.
Solan,
I can't send you some pics I told you I would send.. It says your Mailbox is too full.
If you clean it out let me know and I'll try again.
