I’m putting an additional cabinet and cosmetic doug fir glulam into a kitchen that was built three years ago. The existing fir trim and beams are nicely aged and have taken on that reddish color characteristic of aged fir. Of course, the new pieces I’m building are three years behind in the aging/coloring process. Has anybody experimented successfully with a technique that will hasten the match of old and new Douglas fir? I could just say “wait 3-4 years and they’ll be pretty close but I’d like to have a reasonable good match now.” The originals were not stained and just have a satin polyurethane top coat. Thanks for any help.

You might try tinting the poly. You can use TransTint dyes from http://www.homesteadfinishing.com for this.
