My entry didnt make the cut...but voted for my fav. Good luck.
Hey Getch............super taking on the challenge.......I didn't make the cut either, but the whole idea of being a part is what its about.
I'm taking my time before I vote............and see how far my criteria goes.
Again....Getch..........good job being in the game!!!!
Neil
Thanks...Agreed.
I saw my favorite almost immediately. Again good luck to the all!
Is it just my browser (IE7) or are many of the larger pictures linked to the main viewing/voting page for this contest chopped off at the bottom end for some reason?
Lataxe, half-blinded so cannot vote yet.
Same issue as Lataxe has described with Firefox also, the bottom 1/3 of the photo is cropped.. I see it on 18th century spice cabinet.. No matter what I try, the bottom 1/3 is lost if you attempt to view a larger photo..
OK, here's my submission for this year's contest. Started with about 16 bf of leftovers from the rack and off-cut bin.. Measures about 21 h x 14 w x 10 d. Hand carved fan and drawer dovetails, re-worked store bought rosettes and a one-off first ever attempt at gooseneck moulding. Finish is dye, BLO, amber shellac and paste wax. After seeing the fine projects that made the cut of 24, I'm definitely inspired to stretch the creativity further for next year's contest. How about seeing some of the others that didn't quite make it this year?
rsgreenwood..........I'm with you on getting everybody who participated to give us a glimpse of there creativity.
For some reason people are hesitant .........why???.... I have no idea!!!!
I previously posted a picture of my entry asking the same thing you are requesting. Right after the April 30 deadline.
If other participants post, I'll post my shot again in a heart-beat with the TEAM!!!!
My idea of internet woodworking has alot to do with the social aspect of building together and sharing accomplishments. That aspect is a bit lost in this build-off, maybe because it's the first.
Reading that you're looking forward to next year's build-off tells more of who you are and just as meaningful as your very clever "green" mini-chippendale!!!! COOL!!!!
Here's to your next build.........NeilMy video blog.........up a level

Your post brings up an interesting facit of woodworkers to me. It seems that most are timid to show their stuff. I've also observed that many woodworkers are somewhat reclusive and I have felt that feeling also.
It's great when I'm in the woodshop, enjoying the activities of working wood, overcoming the perceived obstacles, reveling in my accomplishments. Then someone walks in and says, "Why didn't you do this? Why not do that? How about if you did this?"
Dang, and all this time I thought I was creating a masterpiece! Do I have an inferiority issue? Is my work not as good as others? What is the definition of good work?
I take my hat off to all you folks who took up the challenge and let the creative juices flow into a piece that you are proud of. It's not a situation where just because you didn't make the Final Four, or whatever, that your work is inferior.
Oh contraire, but an opportunity for you to inspire others. Think about all the other folks who, for whatever reason, did not submit an entry. This is your chance so show us your stuff! Inspire us to make an entry into the next Build-Off!
I for one am inspired by the work I've seen and would like to see more. So Furnitologist and all you other entrants so your TEAM colors!
Best Regards,

Actually, Bob - that sort of humility in the woodworker community is MUCH appreciated by this particular subscriber and forum participant.
What I don't like is seeing a description like this (attached to the carved table in the contest) when it's submitted by the maker - it goes way over the top towards self-promotion, IMHO, and caused me to vote for another entry:
"
Inspired by the classical Rococo style, this beautiful Hall table was made by combining various pieces built and carved from a 17 bf hard maple board. The three dimensional look of the top center was made by inlaying 0.25" pieces from the same board. The inlay parallel to the edges was made from crosscut maple pieces, while the diagonal net was made using a plain cut. The exquisite detail on the edges and corners was added using most of the remaining pieces. In fact, almost the entire board was used, except for a few small pieces. The lack of material to work with inspired the artist to use all the spare parts to make the work truly superb and unique. The apron is carved with a shell surrounded by a flowing curtain. The curtain is so realistic that it seems to by floating in the wind. The legs are carved with an intricate spiral, topped with a linen fold as lifelike as the curtains.
Finish : Dye stain, acrylic lacquer
Dimensions: 43.25” x 19.5” x 35”
Wood: Hard Maple
Bob...............I'm so appreciative to see your post.
You are spot on......it is difficult for some woodworkers to post there work, it can be intimidating, but heck it's about celebrating creativity and to support the voting as the forum narrows down the select 24. In or out at this point, I find it all very exciting!!!!
Thanks Bob.........your encouragement is contagious...........you get it man!!!!
Here's my piece of the TEAM colors..........Neil

Thanks for the kind words on my cabinet.Right now i am saving up for a jointer. If i stay away from the wood guy i should be able to get something this month.Bye
Thanks Guys, does anyone know how many entries were received?? I just read one of the 24's descriptions, he said he figured he was one of the last of the 25000 entries FWW received. I'm finding it difficult to believe.
Thanks

I'm one of the 24 finalists, and I hope they do an article on doing this contest, including the number of applicants, the vote response, and how they judged the top 24. I'm surprised they aren't promoing the contest more visibly, though. I'd also like to see a pictorial of the other entrants.

super piece, mhs. good luck.
Awhhh shucks as I shuffle about in front of the bench ankle deep in shavings.
I think this is sort of like a feeding thang. Your piece inspires someone to try different designs, look at and get ideas about how they might incorporate parts of it into their own piece, maybe do the same or similar piece but use different materials.
The reality to me is that we're all a team. Everyone in here has something to contribute. I don't know about you but the spirit of Knots inspires me and that spirit is created by the folks who participate.
Two weeks ago I stopped by a yard sale here in town and met one of the most fantastic woodworkers. He is 73 years old and we spent over 2 hours swapping tales about woodworking.
Come to find out he has made pieces for famous people the world over, even some that are in the White House. And he holds 27 patents for designs he came up with.
As I was leaving his wife told me he is retiring and it will be good for them as they will get to spend more time together. As he and I walked back to my truck he asked me if it would be ok for him to visit now and again in my woodshop.
I left there with goosebumps, anxious to get back to the woodshop. You KNOW we will have more get togethers.

Morning Neil,
I just got back from your blog on the design of your lamp.
I want to thank you for your video about the design process that you went through. I looked at it several times and got some really great ideas on the process.
One can get a real appreciation for all the hard work to realize the final product. I think more of this kind of thing would go a long ways toward educating potential customers as to why craftsmanship of the caliber displayed in the Build-Off is what it is.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ENTRANTS. Pretty amazing stuff and I for one think every piece should be showcased in FWW - maybe in #200!?
