Is there a thread I’m not seeing on the Maple Build-off, somewhere in KNOTS. If so could somebody provide direction.
If not……….. Who out there has entered????
Do we want to started a thread of entries???? Here in General or in the Gallery???
Be fun to see everybodies work and banter a bit.

I'd like to see everyone's entrys as well, but there seems to be an air of secrecy surrounding the subject.... I, unfortunately, did not get around to building my piece. I made a mock-up several months ago, and liked everything but never found the time to get working. Even went so far as to seek out the perfect board...
Anyways, I'd also like to see a thread about the One-Board Build Off.
Regards, Jarrod
Hey Jarrod................good way of putting it, it does appear to be shrouded in secrecy or worse, maybe nobody built.
I'm curious to see your mock-up now, Jarrod........let's see where this goes.
If somebody has built to participated, could you mention why you are not posting a picture.
Personally I'm hesitant because the internet woodworking challenges/build-offs are about group participation. Entries, mock-ups, design processes, open viewing to forum members for opinions and thoughts that all lead to new discussion on building to constraints.
There's alot being left off the table here as to what this and future build-off's could become. Maybe I'm expecting too much from the history of "Fine Woodworking". Is it possible the inherant drive of "Fine Woodworking" to push the craft is no longer understood??

Here are a couple pics of the mock-up; please keep in mind that this was simply for scale and proportion. It 'is' a small, Krenovian/Asian inspired, tabletop tea cabinet. I still plan on building it....just not sure when.

Neil,<!----><!----><!---->
Hello there! Here is a not so quick update on the Build-Off Contest but hopefully this will answer all your questions. This is the first time we have ever done this and I have to say it is pretty exciting. <!----><!---->
All entries were due by end of day on April 30th. Currently our panel of judges is reviewing the submissions and will narrow them down to 24 finalists based quality of design and craftsmanship. The 24 finalist will then be posted on our website (https://www.finewoodworking.com/buildoff) on June 2nd and the voting will begin. Each project will be represented on the main page with one of the images that was submitted. Voters can then click on the image for more information and a new window will open up with links to more photos, the project description and the creators name and location. Example - John Smith from <!----><!----><!---->Newtown<!---->, <!---->CT.<!----><!----><!----><!---->
Voting will take place over four rounds.<!----><!---->
The first round of voting will begin on June 2 and end on June 16, 2008. The votes will be tallied and the twelve (12) Semi-Finalists will advance to the second round of voting. <!----><!---->
The second round of voting will begin on June 17, 2008 and end on June 30, 2008. The votes will be tallied and the six (6) Semi-Finalists will advance to the third round of voting. <!----><!---->
The third round of voting will begin on July 1, 2008 and end on July 14, 2008. The votes will be tallied and the three (3) Semi-Finalists who receive the most votes will be deemed the “Finalists” and advance to the fourth and final round of voting. <!----><!---->
The fourth and final round of voting will begin on July 15, 2008 and end on August 1, 2008. The number of votes each Finalist receives will be tallied and the Finalist who receives the most votes will be awarded the First Prize. The Finalist who receives the second highest number of votes will be awarded Second Prize and the Finalist with the fewest votes will be awarded Third Prize. <!----><!---->
Winners will be announced on or around August 22nd. We hope to have the 3 finalist’s projects on display in DELTA|PORTER-CABLE’s booth at the IWF show in <!----><!---->Atlanta<!---->, <!---->GA<!----><!----> and announce the winner live at the show.<!----><!---->
I hope this helps. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected].<!----><!---->
Happy voting! <!----><!---->

Just waiting to see what the top 24 look like - posting soon?
Hey RS.......well at least we know there's 3 of us now..........I'm really looking forward to eventually seeing your's and Mike's work.
I recieved a few e-mails and the concern to posting was putting a name to the piece at this time, which was an issue if the semi-final voting was going to be annonomous.
I can and do completely understand that.
I'm thinking of the woodworking comradery of all those who participated. We may not get a chance to see work that an individual spent hours on and doesn't show-up on the first cut of 24 on June 2nd.
Love this stuff and just trying to be inclusive...............We'll wait to heard from Matt

Hey Neil,
I have great interest in the build off since this is the first woodworking competition I have ever entered.
I am a little concerned that in entering, I submitted front, side and rear images according to the entry form, but the rules found elsewhere ask for front, side and top images.
Has this matter been addressed?
Regarding my entry, it was my intention to construct a piece that tested the bending limits of maple (usually not a good idea), had a heavy emphasis on hand work and required new techniques for its' fabrication. There is a photo compilation of the design process and construction techniques used on my website. As time allows, I will be adding more photos and text to illustrate the processes involved.
If you have any questions or comments please direct them to my e mail address, as I don't often visit the Knots community. You can reach me @ [email protected]
I don't know if posting photos here is appropriate, but you can see my entry on my website. http://www.robertgalusha.com (click the "competition entry" link)
Robert
YEAH!!!.........Robert........that's how you "bend it like beckem" and work the design process.........Way to push. Looks super!!
Did stack and bent lamination on my entry too. An end table/lamp - Posted a picture on the top of my blog page, just click below for a view.....in left margin. I got a bit confused with the shots myself and came as close as I could to front-side-top and figured let the chips fall where they may. ........Heck, where in the game.
Pure enjoyment to see the work and talent that plays in woodworking!!!!

Neil,
I'd like a closer look. If you don't mind, is there an enlarged photo?
I like your web site, very professional. Mine is pretty basic although loaded with, I fear, way too many photos.
Robert
WOW...................nice turn around. Thank you Missy!!!! It is very exciting and we'll see if we can get the forum to have some fun with it.
Again........Thank you!!!
Hi Mike:
Yeah......ya get antsy.......heck you just worked your butt off. Be great if we could really open this up.
Heard from Matt as follows:
Hi Neil.
I haven't been involved in that project so I passed on your email to our
Marketing manager. She said she would follow up with a post in Knots.
- Matt
So we'll soon hear something in Knots.........hopefully we can build some comradery with those who have entered. Already I'm excited to see your piece and have had contact with Robert.... a pretty cool guy. I don't care what it is, it's exciting to see people's work!!!!!

Well we heard from Ms Robinson of the Marketing Department and names will be applied to voting. See Note from Missy Robinson above.
Names and location will be used for voting so the anonomous voting concern is off the table. All pieces will be identified by builder and voted on; not an anonomous piece.
SO.....
What if we all posted one picture of our entry in the Maple Build-off, find out who we all are, create a little buzz about our "Fine Woodworking" entries, and build a comradery of "Build-off Builders".
In this moment of "internet woodworking".........lets use the vehicle and allow our entries to speak for who we are; not the internet telling you who we are. Hummm our work speaking for us brings back a little bit of "old school craftsmanship" to our woodworking passion. I like to think "Fine Woodworking" still carries a bit of the old school.
Yeah........there's the motivation of winning........but there's also the motivation of inner drive and participation.
I'm here to participate and be a part with those select individuals who challenged their woodworking skill-set.
Historically, finding that inner challenge has always been a driving force behind "FineWoodworking" and its position in woodworking publications.
Here's my ONE picture.........Hope to see others!!!!!!!!

Mike,
Sorry, my bad. I did follow your link and your table looks great! This link process, I think, is a good end-around any trouble with posting photos officially on the blog.
Let's hope everyone posts a link! God bless the 21st century.
Robert
This thread has gotten a bit convoluted........but briefly: trying to see who has entered and is part of the Maple Build-off.
FWW Marketing (Missy Robinson) has posted in the thread above.
Thought posting one picture of our work and catching up with those who has entered might be fun.
I've posted previously, but incase it's lost in the thread........here is my entry again:
Hope to see more..........Neil
