Making your own tools with brass
Fellow Woodworkers,
For a while now I’ve been admiring a wide array of homemade hand planes, mortice gauges, etc. I’d really like to make a few tools, especially something like the dovetail marker shown here:

Hopefully that link will take you to Colen Clenton’s line of hand tools. I’m just curious where one looks for information on tool making. Are there any good books out there?
Thanks

"Making and Modifying Woodworking Tools", by Jim Kingshott is a good place to start. The book is out of print but it should be available from used book dealers.
That book is not an easy find. I have a very extensive used book network and no sign of it so far.
Well, you're right! I checked the top ten internet book search sites and not one of them has a copy. I'm surprised since the book is only 11 years old. I'll be sure to be on the lookout for it and buy all I can find. I should be able to sell them for good money.
There have been a few articles in FWW on this. Best thing you can do is get some books on metal working and apply the basics to making tools. Brass is easy to work with files, fretsaws, etc. I cut brass all the time with my tablesaw and a negative hook blade. Even books on jewelry making are apt as the techniques on silver soldering are very useful plus a lot of jewelry deals with non-ferrous type metals so the techniques apply very nicely to brass. Tim McCreight would be a recommended author to look at.
Just remember that epoxy won't stick to brass worth a hoot!

Dang Mike, those two owls would be flattered to know the impression they've made:) Have a good one,Steve
Check with Dave Anderson at Sawmill Creek's Neanderthal Haven. He and quite a few others there make some gorgeous tools and should be able to point you to some good sources.

A lot of others lurking at Traditional Tools. (Nice files showing some of their work too. Check the Gallery.)

Good luck, and don't forget to post some pictures of your work. (Please post if it's less than perfect! I nearly get sick every time someone posts what looks like perfect work and write, "This is my first attempt....")
