My Mother has reached the point in her life when she needs a cane to walk safely.
I am interested in making canes for her, and do not own a lathe. I am considering bent lamination construction, finishing with hand tools and perhaps a router.
If anyone has any words of wisdom to share, including sources for materials such as non-skid tips, I’d appreciate your input.
Thanks a million, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Here's a link to the section of the Rockler catalogue that deals with walking cane heads and Googling on Walking canes will provide sites offering plans.
One aspect to be considered, the finished cane should be as light as possible if it's for an elderly person.
Thank you very much; I appreciate your input!
Merry Christmas, Ian.
Speaking as one who has been hobbled for a while and forced to use a cane for a spell in my life I could not possibly overemphasize the importance of a rubber foot. These rubber slip-ons prevent slipping on the multitude of slick floors out there.

I was in the same boat - however, my mother died before I got a chance to make & give her a cane. Don't hesitate to get her one "off the rack" so to speak, until you can make her something special.

Sorry to hear about your Mom, Don. I can't possibly thank you gentlemen enough for your thoughtfulness and timely input.
I appreciate your concern; I purchased a cane for Mom so she'd be taken care of while I'm conducting my research. It's a terrific item I purchased at the San Diego Zoo (of all places); it's carved and painted to resemble a giraffe! She loves it. I'm looking forward to creating several more canes that will form the basis of a widely varied collection to include both whimsical and understated/elegant pieces.
I'll see if I can snap some digital photos and post them here just before I give them to her.
Have a terrific new year!
