I recently used my band saw can cut veeneer to my desired 1/8 thickness. I now have one side smooth from the planer and rough band saw marks on the other side. I don’t have a Performax type sander and my planer can’t plane boards this thin. I have tried to plane thin boards with a “carrier” board to span the infeed table rolls and have waxed the carrier surface. It still does not work. The boards get ruined.
How can I remove the band saw marks and maintain thickness.
Thanks,
Don

You can use a cabinet scraper (one with handles) or a card scraper to remove the band saw marks. If you have a toothing or keying plane you can also use that to remove the band saw marks and put in a tooth or key for the glue to bind on. I sometimes will just remove any bad irregularities and use the saw marks as a key for gluing. Depending upon the glue you use, if it shrinks as it dries, these marks can be visible on the face, but scraping usually removes them.

I too make bandsawed veneers.I run them thru tha sander to equalize the thickness. If the sawed sheets are close to the same thickness,I think that the sawed surface will make an excellent face for the glue. Since you do not sand to thickness,I think that a 1/8"sheet of rubber under the caul might make the pressing easier. If your glueup is too wide for a well tuned planer,a sharp plane and scraper will do the rest. Find a woodworking buddy with a drum sander :) Or look around for a woodworking co-op that would sell you 20mins of time on a drum sander.
Other then what i mentioned above or like the others above me, use a hand plane or scraper. A random orbit sander might get by be be careful not to make dips or hollow spots.
why not use a carrier board you know is flat, and use double sided tape to hold down your resawn stock? MDF might work. would suggest hot melt glue but you can't predict a flat glue up.
or just use a MDF board on your platen to increase the cutter height, wax it and send the resawn stock over top of it. there are more ways to skin a cat as the saying goes. (hope i don't get in doodoo for saying that??)
