It does look like hurricane EARL will be landing in my neck of the wood tomorrow. In 2003, when a Category 2 storm hit, we had to get rid of a few good looking maples. One of the neighbor’s must have been 24″ in diameter and probably 20-25′ of straight trunk. Having started to work with wood since then, I wish that I realized what I was letting go. But hey, that maple that fell over the car and the power lines wasn’t my friend at the time.
For sure, if Earl uproots more trees tomorrow AM, I’ll be coming up with a project for this “hurricane lumber”.

Well I hope it does turn away and not hit there. Five years ago Katrina was still a cat one and a spawner of tornados when it hit my town in Mississippi - what a pain that was. I did get to completely rebuild my back deck when it was all said and done. Also got some dogwood, oak and pecan lumber out of it. Somewhere around here I've got a photo of two bottles of Jack Daniels sitting on my bandsaw table in my dark basement shop (without power for eight days) - part of my hurricane preparedness kit. Good luck to you, EH
Thanks, it now looks like it will be a tropical storm: which we seem to be getting 1-2 each year. Hurricane Juan certainly caused mahem for us in 03: 8 days of darkness, no Jack Daniel. Everything but shingles, power lines and weaker trees should be fine. ... and I was planning to go pick up my Bandsaw+planer+jointer tomorrow!

Earl is an underachiever
Earl seems to be giving shoreline Connecticut a pass, We've some rain, but no wind to speak of, though the evening is early. I've got a long fetch for wind from the NE which is what I would expect, but none yet. Still let's hope for no westward wobble as the storm nears Cape Cod and the Islands. They still are expected to see storm winds, but only a westward direction change would give them hurricane force winds, and fortunately even then only a type I, and on the Navigable Semicircle as well.
I live on that Canadian scrap of land projecting out to sea that Earl will use to lose it's strenght ;) My stuff is tied down with thick nylon rope, we'll see what happen in about 12 hours.
Thanks you for the post.
