First time poster, fairly inexperienced woodworker. I am about to tackle making two full sized beds for my twin boys. My intention is to make them as a raised panel style headboard and footboard that will be either stained or painted a navy blue color. My thought is to use poplar and glue up the panels but I am open to suggestion. My plan is to have the panels sit in a slot in both the top and bottom rails of each piece. How snug should these fit ? My intention is to use a mortise and tenon joint at the rails to the posts.

If you're going to paint, poplar is ideal. No other solid wood I've worked with takes paint as nice. Norm swears by that MDO (medium density overlay) paper coated plywood for painting. I've never used it, but it might be worth checking out to avoid the glue up work for the field panels.
I love the smell of sawdust in the morning.
I have two boys also, now ages 20 and 16. I definitely wouldn't recommend using anything but solid wood. That bed is going to get lots of abuse.
