Hello all,
I’d like some help with deciding what wood to use to make a cross that will be placed out doors and what would be the best type of long lasting finish? I’m not sure if the cross will be placed in full sunlight or shade, but I figured I’d ask here to get a start.
Also does any now of the ratio best suited for the cross like how long one piece compared to the other and the placement of the shorter on one on the longer one?
thanks in advance for the help, KaiserRoo

Check the above link for a start- a lossless scalable image of a Christian cross.
I assumed Christian but there are many other types-
I'm curious- is it artistic? religious? memorial? sacred?
Will people be able to touch it?
I could see it as an exotic beautiful species or really raw and weathered- Either has the potential to be inspiring.
more info??

Thanks for writing Dave,
I guess I would like it to be a little of all the things you have mentioned. As far as the cross goes I would it would be christian. I'd like to find a corpus made in Italy as they are painted beautifully. I wouldn't want it to be touched too much.
Thanks for the help, KaiserRoo
I used rift-sawn white oak for a small cross I made for a temporary marker for my mom's grave.I joined it with epoxy and didn't finish it. I reasoned that no finish would last more than a few months, and since it was to be outside less than a year, it would look better without a finish.
It has since weathered to a gray color, and the carved lettering has become more distinct, in the six months that it has been in place. It's holding up well, and I'm confident it will hold up until the permanent marker is installed.
As far as the proportions go, I copied them from a pattern I had enlarged. It seemed to work.
Hope this helps.
